WHAT IS PRODUCTION ENGINEERING?

Have you ever been to a factory or industry? Have you seen a factory or industry in television? Have you ever thought how the whole system works efficiently? Who has planned and implemented the whole system, selected the technology, machines and the amount of materials? Well the answer is production engineer. Without a production engineer a company may never operate efficiently. An entire production cycle consists of planning, procurement of materials, managing, manufacturing, distribution and sales. A production engineer plays a major role in all sections except distribution and sales.

Production engineering is some what similar to mechanical engineering. Almost half the subjects are same for both courses. The difference is that production engineering has an upper hand in management side and manufacturing side. Manufacturing subjects gives you knowledge about machining processes (milling, drilling etc), joining processes (welding, soldering etc), castings (die, sand etc), metal cutting and tool design, machine tools, automation, assembly lines, jigs and fixtures etc. Management subjects makes you strong in ergonomics, manufacturing management, materials management, production planning etc. And therefore production engineering is a combination of manufacturing technology and management techniques. During your engineering course, final semesters mainly consists of management subjects. You can get mechanical equivalent certificate by just writing a test.

    1. Its definitely not boring If you are interested in working in a manufacturing company, core companies etc. Its more interesting than mechanical engineering and not that difficult as mechanical engineering because the last 3 semesters are management subjects.
I will mention a few core subjects- electrical drives and automation, mechanics of solids, metallurgy and material science, machine tool technology, theory of machines, fluid mechanics and machinery, design of machine elements, thermal engineering, industrial automation, welding, metal casting, tool engineering, industrial engineering(all these subjects are there for mechanical engg also).
Management subjects- production management, maintenance engineering and management, total quality management, financial management, supply chain management, inspection and quality control, human resource management etc (i have mentioned almost all the subjects except few)

    1. Production engineering has a very good scope. But the choice depends on your taste. Are you interested in mechanical companies? Almost every engineers go for MBA or M.Tech after engineering. If you are interested in doing MBA after engineering then i would definitely recommend production engineering because production is mechanical+management.

    2. And if you are not interested in electrical or electronics then EC will turn out to be really difficult. Almost all EC engineers end up in IT companies unless you are too good. If IT is in your mind, then EC is the course for you because EC engineers get easily placed in IT companies.

  3. Hey, I Would Like to know more about production engineering Branch in NIT trichy. Is the scope in india as well as abroad good for production engineers?? And can you give me a comparision of mechanical engineers and production engineers as I'll hav to choose any1 of them by next year.

Being A NRI I'll be taking seat through NRI Quota so please suggest other colleges offering production engineering ( B.tech ) (More preference to colleges in states near by gujarat).

Thank you for giving a breif explantion on this interesting field of engineering + management :D

    1. Production engineering in NIT Trichy is really good. The placement is too good. But the thing is if you don't get placed in college you will find yourself roaming around after college but that is the case for mechanical engineers too.

Both are somewhat similar and after completing production engineering you get a mechanical equivalent certificate. If you are interested in cars, automoniles, etc then you should opt mechanical engg whereas in production engg there are no automobile subjects. The other difference is in the final semesters, production engineering has a lot of management subjects and opting MBA for higher studies is going to benefit a production engg more than a mechanical engg.

Got to http://www.engineering.careers360.com/top-engineering-colleges-gujarat-2013 to know the top engineering colleges in Gujarat.
